In our last blog post, we wrote about three main questions one has to ask yourself after completing a resume. The message, job requirements, and accomplishments on your resume are of primary importance and one has to make sure these three components aren't messed up. However, these are not the only things one has to pay attention to. In this article, we will list more questions to ask yourself during the resume writing process. They may seem insignificant, but in resume writing, there are no insignificant details as any small thing can become a turnoff or help you get an interview appointment...
Question #4: Can you find unnecessary details? As we have said small things can help you stand out against the crowd as well as they can be a turnoff. By asking these question we encourage you to leave out all unnecessary information on your resume. The thing is that people reviewing resumes don't have time for details that mean nothing. For example, no one is interested in your high school diploma - why take up space by listing such information then? Also, things that have nothing to do with the job you are applying for have to be left us too. So when you are done with writing a resume, review the document and see if there is anything you can delete. After you do that scan the document again to see if there is anything left that is still not so important to take up space on your CV. Do it several times to make sure the information you present to a potential employer is important enough for him/her to pay more attention to your candidacy.
Question #5: Are you sure your resume is error-free? Many job seekers believe their resumes don't contain any spelling or grammatical mistakes because they use to run their resumes through an online spell checker or something like that. However, no spellchecker or online grammatical check program can ensure your resume doesn't have any mistakes. Small mistakes can become the factor that will disqualify you from the position (though it doesn't happen very often, there is still such possibility); therefore, it is extremely important you carefully proofread your documents on the subject of mistakes. It is better if you give them to the people who know the linguistic and punctuation very well because if you do it on your own you will likely omit something.
Question#6: What about resume formatting and design? Job seekers always try to find the most effective approach to resume writing. Some of them like experimenting with formatting trying to choose the most attractive layout for a resume. However, we believe that everything on the resume should be tailored to the needs of a potential employer. So when you consider choosing the proper format and design for your resume, think of what would be the best for the person reading it. We recommend conservative formats and layouts if you apply for the position that doesn't require your design and creativity skills. Classic format and layout will help the hiring authorities to concentrate on the most important - your qualifications and experience. If you apply for a designer position, we highly recommend you use a creative approach to choosing a resume layout and format. This will demonstrate your skills and qualifications more than words. Asking these questions will help you eliminate small mistakes that may disqualify you from getting hired. It will certainly take time to answer these questions and especially deal with the answers. But it is worth it - investing your time into resume writing can bring great results in the long run.
